Wild Flight Farm has been growing certified organic produce in the North Okanagan for more than three decades – since 1993. While we do not have a direct partnership with Wild Flight Farms, we work closely alongside them on promoting organic agriculture in the Okanagan-Shuswap.
The farm is located on 20 acres along the Shuswap River in Mara, British Columbia, on fertile river-bottom land shaped by water, wildlife, and time. Its name comes from the many species of migrating and resident birds that live on and pass through the farm each year, a living reminder of the land’s ecological richness and seasonal rhythms.
A farm rooted in place
Wild Flight Farm was established in 1993 by Hermann and Louise Bruns, who set out to grow food in a way that aligned with their environmental values and their belief in local food systems. From the beginning, organic production was not a marketing choice but a practical and ethical one. They wanted to grow food they themselves could not easily find and to offer their community a clear alternative to industrial agriculture.
The farm sits along the Shuswap River, where the landscape includes open fields, riparian areas, and rich soils fed by the river’s annual cycles. The presence of birds, insects, and wildlife has always been treated as a sign of health rather than something to control or exclude.
Over time, Wild Flight Farm became known not only for the quality of its vegetables but for its consistency. Hermann and Louise made a deliberate choice to invest in infrastructure that allowed them to grow, store, and sell produce year-round. Expanded cooler space, packing facilities, and hoop houses made it possible to keep organic vegetables available long after the outdoor growing season ended.
A new chapter, built on a strong foundation
In March 2025, Juan and Helen became the new owners of Wild Flight Farm. As immigrants to Canada, one from Mexico and one from Ukraine, stepping into the stewardship of this land was both exciting and deeply meaningful. The name Wild Flight took on a new personal resonance for them. Like two birds in flight, they were searching for a place to land, put down roots, and build a future for their family. This farm became that place.
Juan and Helen bring a deep respect for the legacy created by Hermann and Louise, along with their own professionalism, lived experience, and commitment to organic agriculture. Their goal is continuity, not reinvention. The practices that built trust over decades remain in place, strengthened by careful attention, community connection, and long-term thinking.
Growing food, building community
Wild Flight Farm grows a wide range of certified organic vegetables and herbs, marketed directly to eaters across the region. You can find their produce year-round at the Salmon Arm and Revelstoke farmers’ markets. They also supply Urban Harvest, an organic home delivery service based in Kelowna, and work closely with other local farms to keep organic food accessible across the North Okanagan and Shuswap.
Additional retail locations include Fruit World in Sicamous and Farmer John’s in Grindrod. The farm also operates an online store with weekly ordering windows and multiple pickup options, including on-farm pickup at the Wild Flight packing shed.
Direct-to-consumer sales have always been central to Wild Flight Farm’s approach. Farmers’ markets, newsletters, and clear communication have helped build long-standing relationships with customers. Their weekly e-newsletter shares what is available, what is coming into season, and what is happening on the farm, creating a transparent connection between field and table.
Stewardship through organic practice
Certified organic production at Wild Flight Farm is about more than meeting standards. It reflects a broader philosophy of land stewardship, soil health, and shared responsibility. Organic practices protect the river, support pollinators, and maintain soil fertility without synthetic inputs.
Equally important is the farm’s role within a wider network of growers. From its earliest days, Wild Flight has collaborated with neighbouring farms, shared resources, coordinated deliveries, and supported new farmers entering the field. This spirit of cooperation has helped strengthen regional food systems and keep organic agriculture viable in a changing landscape.
Looking ahead
Today, Wild Flight Farm continues to evolve while staying grounded in the values that shaped it from the start. With Juan and Helen carrying the work forward, the farm remains committed to growing high-quality certified organic vegetables with care, integrity, and respect for both land and community.
Wild Flight Farm is not just a place where food is grown. It is a long-running conversation between people, soil, water, and time, one that continues to unfold season by season.
