Waiting for rain in the Okanagan

NELSON, we have finally scheduled a pickup on Friday, September 11th. We would love to find a more convenient (less busy) pickup location, so if you have any suggestions of a spot please let us know!

Penticton! We will be at our regular pickup location this Friday, August 21st, AND you can find us at the Penticton Farmers’ Market on Saturday. Please note that eggs are on sale, but can only be ordered for pickup on Friday. At the market we will have lots of meats for sale, but none of those beautiful eggers.

We are looking ahead to a busy week. The hay cycle has begun again, with a bit of rain in the forecast Steve put the swather to work earlier today to cut down some long-mature stands. We have very limited irrigation at the best of times, but this year our creek has just been a trickle, a drip of its former self, since sometime in June. That has stopped us from cutting what should have been cut because the taller grasses and legumes help to hold moisture in the ground, even when they’re all dried up, and the tender new planting of leguminous alfalfa will fare better with that overhead protection. So we don’t cut and we wait and we look hopefully at the forecasts.

They’ve said there will be rain a few times, but there hasn’t been any rain, just a sprinkle last week when we were all off of the farm. We could see the little dimples that the rain had made in the dust on our driveway, a bunch of natural polka dot shadows, but nothing enough to moisten the ground with, no penetrating rain that would touch roots.

Right now we can see catastrophes of too much water impacting other communities, and we don’t wish for that either, but a soaking rain, a penetrating amount of precipitation is something that all farmers in the Okanagan are hoping for right now.

With the heat of the last week our garden bounty has grown, and now I’m remembering the time last year when I realized I had planted too many tomatoes. I’ve done it again.

After years of putting tomatoes away I’ve realized that I consistently overestimate how much canned tomato we really use. So things either need to be prepared or not. Tomato soup, broccoli soup, those things will get used. Frozen broccoli, it might get used, but it might not…

Our food faves this week

We’ve been eating lots of garden abundance, with protein as a side dish. Some slices of cold chicken on top of a salad, or boiled eggs along for any snack. The other night we fried some round steaks (photo below) and tonight we are having roasted chicken pieces tossed with roasted cauliflower in a yogurt sauce.

Trying in this moment to feel optimistic about the forecast (it says rain, but we have yet to see rain), to enjoy what the farm is producing, and saving up for our annual fall purchase of two groups of certified organic grass fed calves that we can then finish on grass and forage on our farm! It is the biggest purchase of the year for us, but by planning for it and investing in healthy animals raised on two organic farms we are able to maintain a steady supply of beef throughout the year.

With gratitude always,

Annelise, Steve, Finley and Etta
