What rotational grazing looks like on our farm

We divide larger fields into smaller paddocks, then move animals onto fresh pasture on a schedule that matches the season. In spring, grass grows fast, so moves happen more often. In late summer or fall, growth slows, and we stretch rest periods to protect regrowth.

A paddock is “done” when animals have taken a clean first graze, but not a second bite on new shoots. That second bite is where pastures get set back. Rest is the whole point. If plants regrow before animals return, roots stay strong, leaves keep capturing sunlight, and the pasture keeps improving year after year.

Why rest periods matter

Overgrazing is not just “too many animals.” It is too much time in one place. When animals stay too long, they graze the best plants again right as they try to recover. Manitoba Agriculture flags rest as the key: plants must recover before they are grazed again. 

When we protect recovery time, we get thicker stands of grass, deeper roots, and more total forage across the season. That means more days of grazing, fewer purchased inputs, and fewer weak spots that turn into weeds or bare soil.

Soil, water, and drought resilience

Healthy pasture acts like a sponge. More living roots and better ground cover help water soak in rather than run off. Rotational grazing can be a soil conservation tool designed to manage land for the future, not just the current season.

In dry stretches, rested pasture holds on longer because it has leaf cover shading the soil and roots that reach deeper for moisture. In wet stretches, that same root system helps water infiltrate instead of pooling and compacting high-traffic spots.

Rotational grazing lets animals live outdoors, move naturally, and graze fresh feed instead of picking through the same tired patch. Frequent moves also help break parasite cycles by keeping animals off recently grazed ground long enough that larvae die off before animals return. This “rest cycle” approach is commonly cited as a key animal-health advantage of rotational systems. 

It also keeps nutrition steadier. Animals get more consistent access to the top-quality part of the plant, instead of slowly working down into lower-quality stems as days pass.

Rotational grazing only works if fencing is fast to set, easy to move, and reliable enough that animals respect it every time. That is why we rely on Gallagher Animal Management. This matters for day-to-day grazing because paddock size is a management decision, not a permanent structure. If grass is racing ahead, we can tighten paddocks to keep plants in a leafy stage.
