Organic BC helps protect the meaning of “organic” in British Columbia.
About Organic BC
Organic BC is a nonprofit provincial organization based in Vernon, BC. It represents a unified voice for BC farmers, processors, and advocates who support organic principles and practices. Organic BC focuses on advocacy, education, and promotion to grow stronger organic food systems in the province.
Organic BC works to support environmental and human health, help address climate change, expand economic opportunity, and build BC food sovereignty. Their vision is a thriving BC food and farming system built on organic principles. Their mission is to advance organic food systems in BC through advocacy, education, and promotion.
Organic BC’s roots go back to 1993, when BC farmers formed the Certified Organic Associations of BC (COABC) to push for provincial organic standards. COABC also helped shape Canada’s national organic standards work over time. In 2025, COABC shifted to focus on administering the BC Certified Organic Program, while Organic BC became an independent nonprofit society dedicated to advancing organic and regenerative agriculture in BC.
What Organic BC does
Organic BC works with partners across the province to strengthen the organic sector in practical ways. They share tools and training through field days, workshops, podcasts, videos, and the BC Organic Conference. They also work with provincial and federal governments on policy and funding, and they help grow demand for BC-grown organic food.
The principles they stand for
Organic BC affirms IFOAM’s four principles of organic agriculture.
- Principle of health
- Principle of ecology
- Principle of fairness
- Principle of care
Why this matters in British Columbia
BC has a mandatory organic certification rule. Since September 2018, products marketed as organic within BC must be certified through a provincial or federal program. This protects shoppers and supports farmers who follow the standards.
Why Fresh Valley Farms partners with Organic BC
Fresh Valley Farms supports Organic BC and our local certifying body NOOA because strong organic systems need more than farm work. They need clear rules, public trust, and a strong voice with government and markets. Organic BC helps move organic farming forward in BC through advocacy, education, and promotion, which helps farms like ours stay resilient and viable.
