Steve Meggait - Organic Farmer in Spallumcheen BC

Steve Meggait is a fourth-generation farmer and the owner–manager of Fresh Valley Farms in Armstrong, British Columbia. He grew up on the family’s century-old farm, learning early how food, land, animals, and community fit together.

After studying at Selkirk College, Steve returned home to the Armstrong property his family had farmed for generations. The land had long been known as Meggait Farms, and Steve stepped into the work with a clear vision for its future. He began transitioning the operation toward organic, pasture-based livestock production and restructuring the business to focus on regenerative systems and direct-to-consumer sales. As part of that shift, he renamed the farm Fresh Valley Farms to reflect both the landscape he grew up on and the fresh direction he wanted to take the business.

Steve founded Fresh Valley Farms in 2013 and has spent more than a decade shaping it into a regenerative, Certified Organic livestock operation. Today he manages over 300 acres of pasture and forest, raising beef cattle, pigs, and poultry using rotational grazing and low-input systems that improve soil health, increase plant diversity, and support wildlife habitat. His approach focuses on doing the daily work well while always planning for the farm’s long-term ecological resilience.

Known for his work ethic, calm leadership, and deep respect for animals, Steve oversees everything from herd and flock management to pasture planning, fencing systems, water infrastructure, and equipment. He is hands-on in the creation of value-added products like the bone broths that have become so popular with Fresh Valley Farms customers, and he continues to refine the farm’s grazing rotations, forage production, and cropping strategy each year.

Steve is also active in the broader agricultural community. He serves on several committees, contributes to provincial conversations on sustainable meat production, and was a founding director of the Small-Scale Meat Producers Association. His expertise spans cattle, hogs, poultry, forage management, sustainable agriculture, animal nutrition, farm equipment, and direct-to-consumer meat marketing.

Steve lives on the farm in Armstrong with his partner, Annelise Grube-Cavers, and their two young children, who represent the fifth generation on the land. Together they are working to build a resilient food system and keep the farm thriving for another hundred years.
