Introducing our EcoDrum In-Vessel On-Site composter

Fresh Valley Farms now operates a commercial EcoDrum system on the farm. It is a large, enclosed, rotating composter designed for production-scale farms and food processors. While it may not look as exciting as a new barn or greenhouse, it plays a critical role in how we manage nutrients, biosecurity, and environmental impact.

On a mixed livestock farm, organic by-products are unavoidable. Poultry processing, egg handling, and general farm operations all generate material that needs to be managed carefully. In the past, this often meant hauling waste off-site or relying on open compost systems that are weather-dependent, labor-intensive, and harder to control. The EcoDrum allows us to manage this material right here on the farm in a controlled, engineered way.

The system works through forced aeration and mechanical rotation inside a sealed vessel. Temperature, airflow, and movement are carefully managed to create ideal composting conditions. This speeds up decomposition, reduces odors, and helps neutralize pathogens through time and heat. Because the system is enclosed, it also improves biosecurity and eliminates many of the pest and runoff concerns associated with open composting.

One of the reasons we chose this technology is reliability. The EcoDrum is designed to operate year-round, including through cold winters. Composting activity continues even when outdoor conditions are frozen, which matters on a Canadian farm. Electricity use is low, operation is straightforward, and the system integrates smoothly into daily farm routines rather than adding complexity.

The output is a stable, high-quality compost that can be returned to the land as a soil amendment. From a systems perspective, this closes an important loop. Nutrients stay on the farm. Material that once represented a disposal problem becomes part of soil building and long-term fertility. Less hauling means fewer emissions and lower costs. Fewer inputs leave the farm, and fewer need to be brought in.

This kind of technology reflects how we think about farming. Regenerative agriculture is not only about grazing practices and pasture management. It also depends on behind-the-scenes infrastructure that supports animal welfare, environmental protection, and operational resilience. Precision composting may not be glamorous, but it is foundational.
